| wild strawberries gathered earlier this summer |
Last week I bought a pair of handmade feather earrings from a girl at work, the same girl I trained with and spoke about briefly a few months ago. It was her last day at work, and having completed the art sculpture she was working on all summer, she leaves tomorrow on a road trip cross country to tow it to Burning Man. I bought the earrings from her not because it's really my style, but because I wanted to keep a small memory of a brief acquaintance, and this summer with its mushroom foraging and wild fruit jams, and a short time spent in a new place before things change irreversibly in a few months.
My favorite items help me to remember. Sometimes it's to remember a time that's come and gone, or other times it's to slip into an old favorite and feel fully like myself.
I purchase items to keep as a reminder as well, usually it's jewelry. Some remind me of how much I've changed over the years and others are reminders of the amazing new experiences I've had and people I've met over the past year. The earrings are a great way to keep your acquaintance with you while supporting her in a more tangible way which is much appreciated during these sparse times.
ReplyDeleteI find that some clothes remind me strongly of certain times in my life. It's almost like a Proustian madeleine, though I never wear them anymore.
